Causes
- Weakened Muscles
- Aging
- repeated strains on the abdominal and groin areas- physical exertion, obesity, pregnancy, frequent coughing, or straining on the toilet due to constipation
Symptoms
- Swelling or bulge: groin or scrotum (inguinal hernia), Umbilicus (Umbilical hernia), previous surgical site (Incisional Hernia) and Above the umbilicus (Ventral Hernia)
- Increased pain at the site of the bulge
- Pain while lifting
- Increase in the bulge size over time
- A dull aching sensation
- A sense of feeling full or signs of bowel obstruction
When to consult a Doctor
- When u see any of the described symptoms. When delayed it may lead to strangulation where the blood supply of the content is blocked or obstruction where a loop of intestine will get blocked leading to complications.
Treatments
Surgery
Hernia is treated by open surgery and Laparoscopic surgery. In both the surgeries a non-absorbable mesh is fixed over the defect after reducing the hernial contents back into the abdomen.
Open Vs Lap surgery
Open surgery is the conventional one which is being done for decades. A small incision is made and hernia is reduced and mesh is fixed. Advantages: Less expensive, can be done anywhere no specialised equipment needed. Disadvantages: Longer hospital stay, Wound healing takes longer as well as pain.
Laparoscopic Surgery: Small holes are made and visualised using a telescope and repair is done. Mesh is fixed over the defect from below. Advantage: Early recovery and discharge, Pain free , wound heals faster. Disadvantages: Expensive; Equipment needed; Surgeon skills
Prevention
- Maintain ideal body weight by eating a healthy diet and exercising.
- Eat enough fruits, vegetables and whole grains to avoid constipation.
- Use correct form when lifting weights or heavy objects. Avoid lifting anything that is beyond your ability.
- See a doctor when you are ill with persistent coughs or sneezing.
- Don’t smoke, as the habit can lead to coughing that triggers a hernia.
